Three 6 Mafia "Body Parts Pt. 2"
While I’m talking about songs that I love, this is seriously my favorite posse cut of all time. And yes, I realize how stupid a song it is. I will never tire of hearing this.
There are ELEVEN rappers on this song, just tagging in one after the other in such quick succession. Highlights including:
-A rare appearance by Droopy Drew Dog -Project Pat before he was ruined by his solo work...
The Thermals - I'm Gonna Change Your Life
I love this song for so many reasons:
-I love it for its earnestness -I love it for its simplicity -I love it for the timeless melody that Harris buries beneath his snarl -I love how short it is, making you want more -I love the way the drums are buried deep in the mix, putting the percussive rhythm almost wholly on the guitar in the verses -I love how there’s not a single doubled up...
5 Things about Never Let Me Go
1. Being wholly unfamiliar with the plot of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel, I came to Mark Romanek’s film with almost zero knowledge of what this movie was about. Let me tell you folks, this is the WRONG way to come to this. Never Let Me Go is the worst kind of hide-the-ball movie, where the big reveal is not only way less than you expect it to be, but wholly unrewarding and largely...
Pragmatism is Not Progress
Having a day to sit and ruminate over President Obama’s State of the Union speech, and seeing reaction to it from every possible angle, I wanted to put some thoughts down as to why I thought it was an unsuccessful and ultimately disappointing speech. More for my own sake, since let’s face it, what does it really matter what I thought?
First, let me put out front the obvious...
The Future
Love them, hate them, whatever. This is what a bloody music revolution looks like. Just angry, kinetic, chaotic, and unruly kids unleashing their demons on the mic.
Part horror show. Part mosh pit punk aesthetic. Part golden age hip hop screwed and skewered through southern bounce and electronic influence.
Soulless, detestable, powerful, affecting.
OFWGTKA. Still the most exciting thing...
My Schedule Lately
1. Wake Up
2. Pack
3. Clean
4. Take series of heavy boxes to dumpster
5. Play Dragon Age: Origins
6. Repeat
I have a very weird sleep schedule. I tend to just fall asleep whenever, b/c I’m usually pretty exhausted. That’s the drawback of living in a massive apartment complex, things like throwing away a box of trash requires a journey across a building or two. Whew.
So...
5 Things about Blue Valentine
Mild spoilers…
1. The obvious way to capsulize Blue Valentine is to say it’s a love story that goes beyond the happy ending, but that’s far too simple and far too cynical. It’s a movie that plays off of itself, tiny explosions that result in strange emotional chain reactions that result in strange juxtapositions that say more about life, than it does about love or...
5 Things about The King's Speech
1. Some movies can be about small things, contained emotions and limited scenes told within the confines of a greater story. Other movies can be about large, historic events, big, worldly themes of importance, of epic scope. The best movies synthesize these two kinds of movies into one, a film about personal emotions and people in the smaller rooms of giant houses, where actions and words leak...
Rain Puddles In Heaven...
“That’s what I believe, in part because that’s what a child like Christina Taylor Green believed. Imagine, imagine here for a moment, a young girl who was just becoming aware of our democracy; just beginning to understand the obligations of citizenship; just beginning to glimpse that someday she too might play a part in shaping her nation’s future. She had been elected to her student...
5 Things about Narc
I’m back to watching movies again, in between recording and writing sessions, hours-long email writing, and general packing for the upcoming move. Now that all the movies in the theater are crap, I’ll be posting about older movies I see on DVD. Just as an FYI, in case you’re wondering why I’m reviewing older movies. If you’re new around here, as always, I review...
The problem with law school...
“…
Most of us either went to the wrong law school, which is the bottom two-thirds, or we were too old when we graduated,” he said. “I was 32 when I graduated, and at 32 you’re washed up in this field, in terms of a shot at the real deal. They perceived me as somebody they can’t indoctrinate into slave labor and work to death for seven years and then release if they don’t like you.”
This...
Are you kidding me?
I remarked to my friend this weekend that I wanted the Ravens. He thought it was crazy, as I should root for the weakest team so that the Steelers have the best chance to advance to the AFC Championship game.
Are you kidding me? And pass up another opportunity to beat the Ratbirds’ brains into the ground? I’ll risk it, b/c there’s nothing sweeter than knowing it was at the...
This is what it's like quitting smoking...
First, it’s a lot of clammy sweating, hands shaking, headaches, fatigue…
Then it’s a bad cough as your lungs open up again….
Then it’s mostly just a terrible mood…
Then you feel weirdly tired and dizzy all the time as your body starts to get back to zero….
And that’s just the first week!
My New Year's Resolution: No More Drinking
This isn’t so much a real “resolution,” as it is “absolute necessity.”
I’ve been getting insanely sick and nauseous after drinking one to two drinks lately. It happened around thanksgiving, it happened around xmas, it happened on new years. Basically, my head starts throbbing, my stomach turns knots, I want to throw up, and I just get completely depleted of...
