i remember reading in avc’s random roles that this was one of mark hamill’s favorite gigs.
I think your/our reaction to the “geek revolution” is indeed a form of “get off my lawn.” It’s just a weird fact of life that stuff can become less fun when it gets watered down for the masses. I think what bugs a lot of geeks isn’t so much that geek became chic, it’s that the honeymoon of sexy, hard-won cultural legitimacy is over and now we’re living in the loveless marriage of cultural ubiquity. Just gotta deal with it; the party’s over.
The point I was trying to make at the end of that piece was that whatever the status of the scene — of any scene — the most important thing is the work around which the supposed culture exists. Nerds (especially in the nerd media) don’t talk about what we love about things anymore; about what they mean to us. We just celebrate a thing’s basic existence as a validation of our own. That’s why something like Fangasm seemed like a good idea to somebody.
Thanks for the compliment. I would like to think of myself as the Matt Taibbi of stuff that does not matter.
"Several people have commented on the letter about Kate going to bed with Marvel Boy. A tricky one to respond to. I did several drafts before eventually getting down to something that could be printed, and even that was taken down a gear, because there’s limits to what you can say in a Marvel Letters page, y’know?
The only time Jesse, Beefy and I have ever been on stage together. Performing “Get Smart” for the first time ever at Nerdapalooza 2013.

There’s almost nothing anyone else does that you can’t do better… Don’t think that anything should prevent you from at least attempting to be the best at whatever it is you’re getting into.
Perfection is overrated… Sincerity is not.
You can’t save everyone… In fact, you can’t save anyone. Just accept them and move on.
Greatness comes from knowing when to use the knife, when to just hold the knife, and when to hide the knife and smile.
History is artillery for any and everything in life… Everything about understanding anything is in seeing how things go from A to B.
There’s a huge difference between being alone and being lonely… Don’t let anyone make you feel like the latter has to follow the former.
Two people in a room, laughing, drinking, and throwing out ideas with no concrete goals… This is how every big thing has ever begun. Presidents, Fortune 500 Corporations, world-changing movements. These are the important times, when you aren’t even trying. Take time to do these things with people that inspire you.
Put on the best fucking show of your life every time you step out there..for even the smallest, most pathetic, disappointing crowds. Punish the world for missing it.
I’m learning to be okay with the fact that the world doesn’t work the way I want it to. I’m learning to forgive people who act the way I used to. I’m watching for people who turned into what I don’t want to turn into.
Seriously. Eat better. It makes a world of difference.
At some point, this ride will stop… And I’m slowly beginning to learn that the threshold of going from utter fear that it will, to acceptance and peace, is something you can’t fathom, you can’t understand. It’s like watching elderly people at peace as they pass away. But don’t you want more, aren’t you angry? Aren’t you scared? And they just smile and fade. Because it’s okay for things to end. There’s happiness in there, and I’m trying my hardest to find it.
Target and shopping malls feel like home on the road.
You’ll never apologize in the future for caring too much. You might be embarrassed, but no one should ever make you feel less for feeling more. Cry, hell WEEP, at the movies in front of your friends. If they laugh, fuck ‘em.
Try… Every day, really try at something.
