My Top 10 Movies of 2011

UPDATED WITH NEW MOVIES THAT I JUST SAW

Look. I won’t lie. 2011 was a weird year for me. I traveled a lot. And then there was three straight months I was on the road. So I didn’t see EVERY SINGLE MOVIE that I wanted to. I still saw a bunch of movies. And as someone who used to actually write movie reviews for like, papers and other places, I still have this indefatigable need to write out year-end lists.

So like I do every year, here’s my top ten movies and one line about why…

1. The Descendants
…because sometimes you need a reminder of what’s really important.

2. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
…because David Fincher is a fucking force of nature.

3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pt. 2
….because eight movies later, and you still believe in magic.

4. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
….because none of us expected a movie mostly with digital apes to be this amazing.

5. Bridesmaids
…because gender issues are irrelevant when something’s well written and funny.

6. Midnight in Paris
…because sometimes we need a reminder of why we create.

7. Fast Five
….no, seriously. Because we live in America, goddammit!

8. Moneyball
….because baseball always has a great story to tell.

9.  Super 8
….because we all want to create, and hope we have something as interesting to make.

10. Captain America
….because that scene where he jumps on the grenade.
